Estate Walks

Every Tuesday morning, until 28 October

£12.50 per person | 10am – 12pm

Enjoy one of four different walks around the estate in the company of an expert guide and other like-minded walkers (max. group size of 20). 

Each walk is led by an experienced and knowledgeable Chatsworth guide, offering the perfect way to learn more about the park and villages surrounding Chatsworth. Find out about how this landscape has evolved and the stories behind the sights as you take in some of the best views Chatsworth has to offer.

Walks are approximately two hours long. Find out which route we'll be taking each week below.

Calton Lees via River

Join an informal guided group walk around the Chatsworth Estate, exploring some of the most stunning views of the Chatsworth parkland and offering an insight into the work of Lancelot “Capability” Brown and his assistant Michael Milliken. The 4-mile route takes in Queen Mary’s Bower, Paine’s Mill, Calton Lees, and Edensor Village. There will be plenty of opportunities for photographs and questions.

We will be following good paths and minor roads, mostly flat along the river with a short steep climb up to the road then a gentle but long climb up to Calton Houses. The return is mostly downhill. There may be some muddy areas and long grass may hide uneven ground, and steep steps at Edensor village which may be slippery when wet. We recommend sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Please be aware of traffic on roads and on farm tracks. The route is dog friendly but please keep dogs on a lead. 

Edensor Village

Join an informal guided group walk around the Chatsworth Estate, exploring the route to Edensor Village and how the area has changed and expanded throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries with glimpses into the earlier past. There will be plenty of opportunities for photographs and questions.

The 4-mile route takes in Queen Mary’s Bower, Paine’s Bridge, Edensor Church, and the graves of Joseph Paxton and Kathleen 'Kick' Cavendish, Marchioness of Hartington, and sister to American President, John F Kennedy.

The route is fairly level and is mainly on well-maintained paths, veering on to occasional grassland which may be slippery when wet. There are no stiles to climb. The route is dog friendly, please keep dogs on a lead. We recommend sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.

Please be aware of traffic on roads and on farm tracks.

The North Park and Golden Gates

Join an informal guided group walk around the Chatsworth Estate, taking in the North Park and Golden Gates. You’ll have the chance to explore and learn about the history of the vast estate with our experienced guide team, including the Rookery Wood, Ice Pond and the Bar Brook. We will explore how the area has changed and expanded throughout the 18th and 19th centuries with glimpses into the earlier past. There will be plenty of opportunities for photographs and questions.

The 3-mile route is fairly level and is mainly on well-maintained paths, veering onto occasional grassland which may be slippery when wet. There are no stiles to climb. The route is dog friendly but please keep dogs on leads and be aware of estate vehicles. We recommend sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.

Lakes Loop

Join an informal group walk around the Chatsworth Estate with our experienced guide team, exploring the lakes above the House and how they were developed to serve the Garden water features. The route includes Emperor Lake, the Hunting Tower, Swiss Cottage, and the Ring Pond.

There will be plenty of opportunities for photographs and questions.

The route distance is approximately 3 miles (5km) and is mainly on surfaced paths and tracks. There may be some mud!  Our suggested return route involves steps but can be avoided using the road. The route involves a steady climb with the gradient easing higher up. Please be aware these tracks are used by farm vehicles and farm residents.

There are no stiles to climb. The route is dog friendly but please keep dogs on leads and be aware of estate vehicles. We recommend sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
