This highly finished drawing is one of several of the same subject by Gossaert, and comes late in the sequence. It has been suggested that the head of Adam is a self-portrait of the artist.
The drawing was previously in the collection of N. A. Flinck, and it is presumed that it was purchased for the Devonshire Collection by the 2nd Duke of Devonshire in 1723–1724.
