Shared experiences that connect us to places, and each other.
Derbyshire and the Peak District are full of memory-making experiences the whole family can share. From simple picnics in the park to underground cave adventures, there is something to ignite each family member's imagination, whatever their age or interests.
Blue John Cavern, Castleton
The Blue John Cavern is world famous and is home to eight of the 14 known varieties of Blue John stone, a beautiful and ornamental fluor-spar. Steeped in history, the mineral has been mined here for centuries and continues to be in the winter months. Guided tours take you through natural water-worn caverns with stalactites and stalagmites alongside veins of Blue John in the limestone.
Ecclesbourne Valley Railway
Derbyshire's longest heritage railway offers an 80 minute ride on a vintage steam or diesel train from Wirksworth to Duffield and back again, with the option to hop on and off along the way. Spend the time being wined and dined or simply admiring the scenic Derbyshire views. Themed events include Halloween and Santa specials, as well as adult driver experiences.
Heights of Abraham, Matlock Bath
Set atop Masson Hill, overlooking the town of Matlock Bath, this 60-acre Victorian country park and garden includes an adventure playground, ancient woodlands, sculpture trail and underground caverns. Access is via a steep zig zag path or by cable car. There is a cafe and plenty of scenic picnic spots as well as regular special events and exhibitions.
Matlock Farm Park
Children of all ages can enjoy petting and cuddling their favourite farmyard animals. There is an indoor play barn as well as outdoor adventure playground, go karts, tots play area and the UK's largest Jumping Pillow. A riding school offers sessions for new and experienced riders, as well as mini rides for little ones.
Thorpe Cloud & Dovedale Stepping Stones
Dovedale Stepping Stones is a popular attraction for families visiting the Peak District. Try the scenic circular walk from the village of Thorpe to avoid a crowded car park whilst expending youngsters' surplus energy. You can even add the short, but steep, 20 minute hike up to the top of Thorpe Cloud for some memorable bird's eye views.
