FAQs

1. How big are your firewood bulk bags?

Our bulk bags are approximately 90x90x90cm in dimension. They are a similar size to those used by building merchants. View the image gallery above.

2. How much wood do you get in a tipper load?

Our tipper loads are equivalent to approximately 4 and a half bulk bags. The wood comes loose rather than in bags. View the image gallery above.

3. Is your wood ‘ready to burn’?

All of our firewood is dry, seasoned and ready to burn! We also offer kiln dried hardwood firewood which has been dried for a longer period of time compared to our air dried seasoned wood.

4. Kiln-dried vs seasoned?

All of our firewood is ready to burn and seasoned so that its moisture content is below 20%. Our kiln-dried firewood is dried for a longer period of time using hot air meaning it is that extra bit drier.

5. Which is best, hardwood or softwood?

All of our firewood is brilliant to burn, but the type you choose depends on how you plan to burn it.

Hardwood is ideal for use on open fires whereas softwood is a great choice for use on wood stoves and log burners alike. Hardwood is also a slower burning wood, however, modern energy efficient log burners now mean that softwood burns for longer with their resins making fire easier to start and less likely to go out. Both seasoned hardwood and softwood produce the same heat per kilo with your average log producing 5kWh (Stove Industry Alliance).

Try a bag of both - softwood can help to supercharge a slow burning fire!

6. Where do you deliver?

We deliver to all villages and towns for free within a 10-mile radius of our wood yard at Chatsworth. We also deliver further afield for an additional delivery fee. See our delivery details above.

7. Do you offer a stacking service?

We are able to offer a stacking service upon request for an additional charge. If you are interested in finding out more or would like your delivery stacking, please contact our office by phoning 07584 176559 or emailing forestry@chatsworth.org.

8. What is the difference between kiln dried and unseasoned firewood?

Kiln dried firewood has been force dried to achieve a moisture content of below 20% making it ready to burn. Unseasoned firewood has not been force dried meaning it’s moisture content is likely to above the 20% legal threshold and is not ready to burn as it requires seasoning over the summer ready for use in autumn/winter. Advice sheets are issued to any customers ordering an unseasoned tipper load providing tips on storage and how to know when the wood is ready to burn. Find out more about the ready to burn scheme here.
