A large gold covered silver cup and cover, the finial in the form of the Savile crest, an owl.
The cup was probably made for Sir George Savile (1633–1695) to celebrate his coming-of-age and bears the hound mark of London metalworker Richard Blackwell. The cup is in the auricular style, so-named because it resembles the soft curves of an ear.
The cup was passed through the Burlington family on the marriage of Lady Dorothy Savile to Richard, 3rd Earl Burlington and came to the Devonshire family on the marriage of their daughter Charlotte to William, the future 4th Duke of Devonshire.
