We are privileged to be custodians of culturally significant heritage assets and take incredibly seriously the role we play in safeguarding them for future generations.
In the ten year period from 2019, the Devonshire Group will invest £50m in its heritage properties and landscapes, specifically in their repair, restoration, improvement and development.
The properties and landscapes which make up the Chatsworth Estate have a deep and rich history, the preservation of which requires constant care and attention.
In 2022/23, a total of £7.0m was spent repairing and restoring Devonshire Group properties and landscapes: £2.0m was spent on the Yorkshire estate, £1.9m on the Derbyshire estate and the Chatsworth House Trust spent a further £3.1m.
In the past 4 years, almost £24m has been invested, helping secure the future of our natural and built heritage.
The Masterplan
The £32.7 million Masterplan was one of the largest projects undertaken at Chatsworth since 1828. The building’s stonework and roof were repaired and restored, and services updated. Internal works delivered new and improved display spaces, ensuring the entire visitor route is now wheelchair accessible.
With the completion of the Masterplan in 2018, attention is now focussed on the conservation needs of the surrounding structures. Repairs and maintenance work has already begun on the stables. Built between 1758 and 1766 by James Paine for the 4th Duke of Devonshire, the stables now houses a shop, restaurants, offices and accommodation.
